The earliest detection

Smoke comes before heat. A smoldering fire in a room releases particles long before the temperature rises to a measurable level, and it is this time lag that the smoke detector takes advantage of.

Where to install it

Hallways, stairwells, offices, bedrooms, meeting rooms, storage rooms—areas where smoke is always an abnormal occurrence. This is the most commonly installed detector in an EN54 system; heat detectors are reserved for mechanical rooms.

Variants

The Smoke/Siren version includes an audible alarm, which is useful when the detector is located far from the building's sirens.
