Trigger the alarm without waiting for a detector
A detector reacts to smoke or heat—that is, to a fire that has already broken out. Someone who sees a fire starting knows about it several minutes earlier. The manual trigger allows them to alert the entire building immediately.

A requirement in many buildings
Manual fire alarms are required in most public buildings and workplaces; they are generally located along evacuation routes and near exits.
Why five colors?
Red is the standard color for fire alarms. Other colors are used to distinguish between different functions at the same location—evacuation, technical alerts, and assistance requests—without the risk of confusion with fire alarms.
